Thanks for the response. Searching the web, I did find the name von der Ropp...but found no leads beyond that. My family rumor is that it was once "von Ropp" and, when leaving Germany, the "von" was dropped in order to avoid being associated with the German aristocracy. What does "von" or "von der" translate as? Does it imply a social rank or was the rank just associated with "Baron"?
