Dear Shirley-Thank you so much for responding! Although I haven't yet verified any Rotes from Columbia Co. that changed their spelling to Roat- I have found that spelling when researching census listings and I DO have a member of the family (my great, great uncle Adelbert Roat) who lived in Etna-Ithaca NY area. The story went that when his parents (Peter and Elizabeth Baldwin Rote died a few months from each other in 1874, all the five children were split up and went to live with "relatives" except him. So to show how angry he was, he changed his spelling from Rote to Roat (as if to separate himself from this siblings). I wish I was in Columbia County to do my research in person! I know that my g'g'g' Grandfather Frederic(k)Rote was born in New York on June 20,1793 and is on the 1820 Taghkanic, Columbia Co. Census, the 1830 (as Roat) and 1840 Livingston, Columbia Co.census, 1850 Claverack, Columbia Co. census. His wife was Elizabeth Smith Rote (1800-1860)she is buried at Linlithgo Reformed Church Cemetary in Livingston. I was able to visit the cemetary, found her stone and took pictures. I was SOOO happy! Frederick's name is on the headstone with his daughter, Lany Rote Sheldon at Willow Glen Cemetary in Dryden, NY. This is near where I live. I have applied to get a copy of Frederick's death certificate thru the Tompkins' Co. Health Dept. which handles these and they say there is nothing there. He died Apr 23,1871. Dryden town clerk office does not have anything there they say at their office. I would love to find siblings and parents of Frederick Rote. There are alot of Rotes in Livingston area (the cemetary I was walking had many stones) of Columbia Co. A few years ago, I sent out a query re: Rotes and received a reply from Gladys in San Diego. Her family is also Henry Rote and Hannah M. Hawver. Her e-mail address at that time (2003) was: wsjh94a@cox.net perhaps you can contact her. She wrote about the members of Henry and Hannah's family and that it was Reuben who changed his name to Roat. She and her sister have been doing the famiy genealogy for several years If you find any mention of Frederick, son Peter etc. in your research, please keep me in mind. Best of luck! Karen.
