Marilyn, thank you for your post. I do not know much about Lingan since I am a Beard researcher, but I do have a great interest in finding both of these Selbys from Adair Co, KY. (both Lingan and Mary Polly Selby).
I believe that the 1830 census is probably Lingan and Mary Beard Selby, in Wabash Co IL. I would love to be able to track the descendants of this couple; I have much information on HER family.

I know more about James Beard and Mary Polly Selby. They were in KY through 1822, when James Graham Beard, their son, was born. Before 1830 they went to TN, where many of the Beard family went. We believe that Mary Selby Beard is the Mary Beard listed on the 1830 Henderson Co TN census. Her father in law, Samuel Beard, lives nearby, an elderly Rev War soldier. In her hh is a man her same age; I believe he must have been very ill or incapacitated and I believe this was James Beard, the son of Samuel. Both James and Samuel died by the 1836 time period and at least some of the children of James and Mary went a little south, into Panola Co, Mississippi. They are there in 1840 and 1850. We have recently come across a document in Adair Co KY that fills in some information about those children who went to MS:
Sarah Elizabeth Sallie Beard b 1811 KY married James Faucett, lived in Panola Co MS, many descendants in AR
Mary A. Polly Beard, b abt 1814, KY married John R. Ward b abt 1814 TN, lived in Panola Co MS
Margaret J. Beard, b abt 1818 KY, married Jesse Ward b abt 1816 TN, lived in Panola Co MS
James Graham Beard b 15 Feb 1822 KY, married Charlotte Ann
Rayburn/Raeburn b 4 Apr 1820 Wayne Co TN, they lived in Panola Co MS and then Gray, White, AR
From the census, three other sons born 1810-1820, names unknown
I do have a lot of information about some of these folks, anyone who can help fill in more appreciated.
I note that Columbia, Adair Co KY has a "Lingan Selby Day" on which it is noted that he died working on his perpetual motion machine. Suspect that this is a later Lingan Selby, but would love to know his dates and parentage. I have googled and searched, but can't find out what happened nor who he was!
