Seeking information on the Shuff family that settled in Washington Co VA (See 1850c, below); especially female surnames. Thanks much. Jack Hockett tlas101@aol.com

MD; see 1860c, WCV HH4142: Shuff, Nancy, 30 with Cuddy, David, 30 & Mary, 27 & fam./// IBID. HH60/60: Shuff, Charlotte, 50; Florence, 27; Elizabeth, 20; David, 7; Wm., 1/// 1870c, WCV, North Fork H283/285: Shuff, Charlotte, 60, PA; Florence, 41; David, 19; Jas., 9./// IBID. HH309/314: Sheffs (Shuff?), Nancy, 48, domemstic with family of Webb, Charles, 56 & Elizabeth, 55, et al./// 1880c, WCV, North Fork: Shuff, Charlott, 70, VA/MD/VA; Florence, 49, dau.; James A., 16; Nancy P., 65, sister, VA/MD/VA; previous HH is: Shuff, David E., 26, VA/VA/VA; Barbary R., 19; Lettie B., 7; see WCV MB 9: p. 65: 29 Aug 1849: … Wm. GLOVER who was bound in a recognizance to appear here at this court, and abide by and perform such order or orders as should be made against him for support of a female bastard child of which Florence SHUFF, single woman, was delivered, on 13th day of June last, appeared in court in discharge of his recognizance. IBID.: p. 136: ...Ordered Samuel Shuff allowed $10 for taking care of Elizabeth Shuff... IBID.: p. 160: Anual meating ... of Monday, 1st day Jun 1846. ...Ordered $10 allowed Saml. Shuff for keeping his Grand Daughter, who is an idiot and a cripple. IBID.: p. 194 [numbered 192]: Ordered James Orr allowed $10 for benefit of Mrs. Harris for keaping an ediot child and that the clerk furnish him an order to the sheriff, Aug 25th 1850... ///Meeting of Monday, 23rd Sep 1850. ...January 27, 1851: I have given an order on sheriff for $10 for benefit of Samuel Shuff for purpose of keaping his Ediot daughter which was neglected in the list given to the sheriff. IBID.: p. 206 [numbered 204... Meeting of 02 day of May 1852. ...Orderd. Samuel Shuff allowed $10 to aid in his support, he being poor person; to be applied by Col. A. Mongle... IBID.: (14 May 1853): p. 221 [numbered 219]: ...Ordered. Saml. Shuff allowed $20 to aid in support of himself and Elizabeth Shuff, his grand daughter, who is an Ediott; to be applied by Sharlottee Shuff... IBID.: p. 225 [numbered 223]: Meeting of 1st day April[e] 1854: ...p. 226... Ord. Samuel Shuff allowed $10 to aid in his support & Elizabeth [blank], $10 to aid in her support; to be applied by Sharlottee Shuff... Numerous mentions continue. Note that after about 1855, Charlotte Shuff is the one who receives the support money. Samuel was likely dead by then. Elizabeth Shuff receives support until at least 1861. In 1862, Robert Perdue is provided money for support of Charlotte Shuff. James and D. C. Shuff appear on the 1884 PPTL, Upper Dist., WCV. David and Jas. A. appear in WCV PPTL, 1888, Upper. In 1894 PPTL, Saltville Dist., David A. is listed as a resident of “The River Hills”; James A. is also listed from “The River Hills” but in the list of “coloured inhabitants”. From T. Colley: another child of Florence Shuff = David E. Shuff (c1854- ) m. 24 Dec 1878 WCV Barbara R. Forbus (c1861- ), d/o George W. & Malinda Forbus.
