I have seen information from the work "Simpkins Ancestors in Pioneer Days 1729-1980" written by Laura Simpkins Glover that discusses this James. There is some documentation, but some holes as well.
Just this afternoon, I completed looking at Montgomery County Tax Personal Property Tax records for Virginia between 1787 and 1812, as I am in the process of documenting my Lawson - Simpkins connections.
My Travis Lawson was married to Maysie (Martha) Simpkins on 04 Jan 1788 in Montgomery County, VA. 1788 also happens to be the first year that Travis is on the tax books.
Travis and Martha (Simpkins) remain in Montgomery County, Virginia in close proximity to James Simpkins until 1808-1809 when they appear to remove to Kentucky. The book mentioned above, does not mention Martha as a child of James born 1729 in NY, but also does not mention her as a child of his sons. Because of Martha's age, she could be a child of James born 1729 or possibly one of his oldest sons.
Unfortunately, I can not get a good handle on the birth dates for these older sons. If I follow the book, James II is out because he was born in 1757. Martha was born in 1770. The book shows that Robert was born in 1757 but a second source says 1745. Robert's Will, however, does not mention my Martha. I tend to believe the 1757 date.
