Hi Linda,
Yes Sked and Skead seem to be interchangeable and may have to do with accent and pronunciation before standard spelling.

My Skeads were buried as Skeds in SCotland but were Skeads in England and eleswhere.

Mine come from Dunbar in East Lothian Scotland - Thomas Skead/Sked born 1771
