Looking to share information about the Shelton Laurel Massacre, an event that took place in Madison County, North Carolina when Conferderate troops stormed this pro-Union county and raided much-needed stores of salt. The backlash that ensued brought forth a horrid and bloody retaliation by the 64th NC Regiment who murdered, at point blank range, 13 men and hurridly buried their victims in shallow graves. In examining the pro-Unionists of NC, this story epitomizes those divided loyalties within the southern state most reluctant to join the Confederacy.
