Mel,

Being from the western part of the state, and depending on the sentiments of his neighbors, he may have enlisted under another name to protect his family from retaliation. There are other union soldiers named John McGlaughlin under different spellings in the 8th and 12th Tenn. Cavalries. One was a trumpeter or bugler.
