There are two types of records - military records (service records) and pension records. Pension records, if you get the full file, will usually include a synopsis of the vet's military career, family info., correspondence over the length of the pension (including that related to spouses should the spouse outlive the veteran), and affidavits from people who knew the vet giving first-hand insight into the vet's life. Usually pension records provide much more data than the military record.
