Why would a soldier use an alias??

While researching a Spanish American War veteran, I found a pension record in his name, and it listed an alias, a totally unrelated name. The soldier is not listed by his right name on the roster, but the name of the alias is listed. Anyone have any thoughts as to why someone would use an alias instead of their right name? This soldier had a brother who also served in the SA War under his own name. Thanks for any suggestions.
