How intriguing, John. I was more interested in finding information on James'( of the spinning jenny) Hargreaves sons when I posted my message so I can't add much to the Speak genealogy. I was trying to trace the parents of my forebear, Edward Hargreaves, when I posted my message. A John Hargreaves and Alice Mills had baptised their son Edward at St Katherine, Blackrod, 9.9.1787. That prompted me to have the StK records searched by an agent. The report word for word:- Blackrod bapts 1760 - 1.1.1790 bapt 24.2.1760 Henry son of Jas & Margaret Hargreaves alias Thos Speak of Blackrod. bapt 24.5.1761 John son of James Hargreaves by Margaret his wife. bapt Oct 1763 Esther dau of Jas $ Marg't Hargreaves, Blackrod. bapt 19.10.1766 Alice dau of John & Margaret Mills, Blackrod. Born 22.8.1787 bapt 9.9.1787 Edward 2nd son of John Hargreaves of Blackrod, weaver, by Alice Mills dau of John Mills. We are obviously talking about the same family and I would love to know why some of them used Hargreaves as their sur-name and others Speak! Notify Administrator about this message?
