Lost Spitzers...1800's (Daniel and John)

I ran across these Spitzers in my family tree who disappeared under mysterious circumstances. Does anyone have any possible connections?
John Spitzer, b about 1858 in Mayland, Virginia and "went west through Brock's Gap with a paper bag under his arm"
Daniel Holsinger, b about 1830, Left Missouri to sell a herd of cattle in Chicago. He sold the cattle but never made it back home.Married to Mary Jane Holsinger (maiden name)and both are from Virginia.
Thanks in advance. Mike
