JOHN CAME OVER ON THE MAYFLOWER AS A SERVANT TO JOHN CARVER. HE IS BEST REMEMBERED FOR HAVING FALLEN OFF THE MAYFLOWER DURING A MIGHTY STORM, AS RECORDED BY BRADFORD:
"IN SUNDRY OF THESE STORMS THE WINDS WERE SO FIERCE AND THE SEAS SO HIGH, AS THEY COULD NOT BEAR A KNOW OF SAIL, BUT WERE FORCED TO HULL FOR DIVERS DAYS TOGETHER. AND IN ONE OF THEM, AS THEY THUS LAY AT HULL IN A MIGHTY STORM, A LUSTY YOUNG MAN CALLED JOHN HOWLAND, COMING UPON SOME OCCASION ABOVE THE GRATINGS WAS, WITH A SEELE OF THE SHIP, THROWN INTO THE SEA; BUT IT PLEASED GOD THAT HE CAUGHT HOLD OF THE TOPSAIL HALYARDS WHICH HUNG OVERBOARD AND RAN OUT AT LENGTH. Biographical Summary Christopher Martin was born probably around 1580, probably in the vicinity of Great Burstead, Billericay, which is where he married the widowed Mrs. Mary Prower on 26 February 1606/7; she brought into the family her son from her previous marriage, Solomon
Prower. Christopher and Mary had a child together, Nathaniel Martin, baptized on 26 February 16 09/10 in Billericay. No other children are recorded to the couple. On Easter in 1612, Christopher Martin got into some trouble with the ecclesiastical authorities for refusing to kneel at communion--an indication that he had a bit of Puritan in him. In 1617, Chistopher Martin invested Đ25 in Ralph Hamor's company traveling to Virginia. He and step-son Solomon then had another run-in, this time with the Archdeaconry Court at Chelmsford in 1619, for refusing to follow Catholic ritual. In May 1620, he purchased four shares of the Virginia Company from Captain George Percey, with the apparent intention of going to Virginia. He shortly thereafter became involved in the Pilgrims attempt to procure passage to Virginia, and was placed in charge of purchasing the provisions for the Mayflower. For the voyage, he was elected governor of the Speedwell. Christopher Martin's governing abilities were heavily criticized by the passengers, however. Passenger and assistant Robert Cushman wrote: Mr. Martin . . . so
insulteth over our poor people, with such scorn and contempt, as if they were not good enough to wipe his shoes. It would break your heart to see his dealing, and the mourning of our people; they complain to me, and alas! I can do nothing for them. If I speak to him, he flies in my face as mutinous, and saith no complaints shall be heard or received but by himself, and saith they are froward and waspish, discontented people, and I do ill to hear them. There are others that would lose all they have put in, or make satisfaction for what they have had, that they might depart; but he will not hear them, nor suffer them to go ashore, lest they should run away. The sailors are so offended at his ignorant boldness in meddling and controlling in things he knows not what belongs to, as that some threaten to mischief him . . . Christopher Martin, his wife Mary, and his step-son all died the first winter at Plymouth.

He was a large, red faced man, selfl-important, pugnacious, fat and breathless. At the end of the journey he was a changed man--having lost his good red color and such an amount of flesh his slovernly clothes hung loosely upon him, his face a sickly yellow, patched with scurfy areas. Treasurer Martins accounts were not in the best condition and he sent for John Carver concerning them the day before he died. Gov. William Bradford in his history said,"Martin brought with him his wife and two children, one of whom Solomon died".

Many alternate spellings of the surname are found. They are typically linked to a common root, usually one
of Norman nobles at the Battle of Hastingts. Surname spellings include Martin, Matin, Mattin, Martyn, and many more. The family name Martin is commonly believed to be of French origin, but was, more accurately, of Viking orgin. The surname emerged as a notable English family name in the County of Leicester where they were recorded as a family of great antiquity seated as Lords of the manor and estates in that shire. They were originally from Saint Martin in Normandy and arrived in England with the Conqueror. Baron Martin was the Scion of the family. They became a very strong seafaring family represented by Admiral Sir Thomas Martin, Captain Matthe w Martin, and John Martin who sailed around the world with Sir Francis Drake. They moved north into Scotland and established a branch at Saint Andrew in the 15th century, and it was of this branch that Abraham Martin, the King's pilot, guided Wolfe's forces down the Saint Lawrence. Hence the battle of the heights was known as "The Plains of Abraham". In North America, migrants which could be considered kinsmen of the family name Martin, or variant spellings of the name, included Christopher Martin and his wife who arrived on the Mayflower in 1620; Joe Martin settled in Providence, Rhode Island in 1635; Elizabeth, Francis, Henry, Jacob, James, John, Joseph, Margaret, Mary, Michael, Peter, Phillip, Richard, Samuel and Thomas Martin all arrived in Philadelphia between 1840 and 1860; but perhaps the first settler was John Martin who settled in Virginia in 1606, 14 years before the Mayflower. From the port of arrival many settlers joined the wagon trains westward. During the War of Independence, some declared their loyalty to the Crown and moved northward into Canada and became known as the United Empire Loyalists. The ancient family motto was "Sure and Steadfast". Christopher Martin was elected by the members of the London contingent to be the governor of the Speedwell. However, the Speedwell had to turn back because it was leaking, and the Mayflower went to America alone. Martin transferred onto the Mayflower and he, his wife, and step-son came to America. The passengers on the Speedwell did not form a particularly good impression of Martin, because he was generally profane and rude, as is recorded in a letter written by Robert Cushman prior to the sailing of the Mayflower:
