Stump, Francis F Company 14TX Calvery RANK:Pvt Confederate Stump, Francis C Company 3 IA Calvery RANK: Pvt Union Church of the Brethren There were several Old Order Brethren congregations in Somerset County. Many people incorrectly refer to this sect of the Anabaptists as "DUNKARD". This term was applied to the members of the Church of the Brethren in the late 19th century and early 20th. The word "Dunker" was acutally a anglicized corruption of the German word, "Tunker," which means "dipper" or immerserer referring to the mode of baptism practiced by this group. The term is still used today by two minor conservative orders, Old Order Dunkards and the Dunkard Brethren. The mode of baptism practiced by this group was adopted during this groups founding in Pennsylvania in the 1770's. In Brothers Valley Township It is believed that the first religious group to arrive in Somerset County were the German Baptists or "Die Bruder's Leute". They are the one's who named "Brueder Thal" or Brothers Valley and were said to have been organized in the county as early as 1763. In Stony Creek Township The Stony Creek congregation called, Glade Church, first records its founding in 1763 under the supervision of George William MARTIN. In 1770, a list of 17 members is recorded by the Rev. Martin and his wife. In Summit Township The next, and most active, Brethren Congregation was formed in Meyersdale in 1783. The first Love Feast was recorded here at the home of John BURGER. John KEAGY was made minister and other early preachers were Peter KOBER, Michael MEYERS, Francis STUMP, John FORNEY and John LIVENGOOD. The first meeting house was set-up in 1845 in Brothers Valley, the second at Summit Mills. Other churches were Meyersdale (1851), Berkley's (1850), Glade Pike, Milford, Jenners, and Middlecreek. Many members of the Amish Mennonite Church became "Tunkers" primarily due to the similarity of their faith and customs. It is reported that at one time, Meyersdale, had more "Tunkers" per square mile than in any other area in the United States. In 1775, part of the Buechley land passed to Yost Yoder by Deed. Public records show deeds in this area belonging to the following families: John Miller, 1775; John Hershberger, 1775; Christian Gnagey, 1775; John Saylor, 1775; Yost Zook, 1773; John Hochstetler, 1779; Andrew Borntreger, 1783; John Borntreger, 1783; Christian Mast, 1783; Jacob Mast, 1783; Jacob Saylor, 1783; Peter Beachey, 1785; Jacob Miller, 1793; and Joseph Mast, 1795. All this land is between Meyersdale, PA and the southern border of PA into Garrett County, MD. Formation of the Brethren Church In 1881, the Brethren Church split from the old Church of the Brethren. The new congregation formed from the progressive movement veered away from the strict non-conformity with the world and moved towards a more centered belief in keeping with the changing times. The Berlin Church and the "home church"in Stony Creek merged and became the Brethren Church. The first pastor was the Rev. Harvey HOLSINGER. Note: For more detailed information on the Church of the Brethren, please read the Mennonite Encyclopedia, Vol. I, A-C, page 109, published 1956. The best known of the Kentucky Churches is the Muhlenberg or Dutch Settlement Church, near Owensboro Kentucky. This is where George Wolfe came [Moore: "Some Brethren Pathfinders"]. Austin Cooper identifies a number of settlers here who came from Brothers Valley in western Pennsylvania. Prominent leaders here were the Rhoads family, Frances Stump was minister, families here Kittinger, Landis, Kimmel, Molar, Welty, Shultz, Dick, Noffsinger, Shaver, Studebaker, Graybill, Eller, and Danner. The beginnings of "Far Western Brethren" of Illinois came from this church. The remnants of this church went Baptist. Brethren from the Kentucky Churches kept moving on to new lands. They went to Southern Ohio, then Indiana and Illinois and Missouri. Then west to Iowa and the plains. < More About FRANCIS STUMP: Census 1: 1830, EDGAR CO ILL Census 2: 1840, EDGAR CO ILL Census 3: 1860, Montague Co., TX Notes for LUCRETIA STEGALL: SMYRNA CEMETERY MONTAGUE COUNTY, TEXAS Stegall, G.T. 17 Nov 1854 22 May 1939 Stegall, Mannie J. 18 Sep 1900 23 Aug 1925 Dau. of A.J. & E.A. The cause of death was as follows: Old Age Contributory Arterio Solerosis (?scribbled) Signed AP Brower M.D. Nov 4, 1913 City: Davis Okla. 1900 Census has brother John W. living in household with Reece NEWSPAPER CLIPPING OLD SETTLERS Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Stump of Davis, OK, are visiting realtives near Bonita, coming in Saturday of last week. They have the distinction of being the 3rd family to settle in Montague County, having moved into this county and settling on Old Clear Creek in 1857 and living there until the Indian troubles during the Civil War forced the people into the old fort at Head of Elm. Moving again to KS in 1865, where they lived the next 11 years, returning to Montague county in 1876 and settling on Post Oak Tavern Prairie, living there until 1904 when they moved to their present home at Davis, OK. The life story of this aged couple would make a very interesting volume, a story of life on the frontier, a story of adventure, and of the horrors of civil strife when it seemed that every man's hand was against his neighbor. All this contrasted with today, when they are enjoying the mellow evening of life amid peace, quiet and friends, makes a romance in life more intensely interesting then the worl's greatest writer have ever been able to construct out of their vivid imagination. October 31, 1913 (newspaper obit) R. B. Stump Death called Reece Bowen Stump early Tuesday morning at Davis, OK. He was at a very advanced age, 87, and for some months past becoming more enfeebled so that the end was not unexpected. A shock never the less when the sad news was recieved. He was born in KY and raised in Ind ? , Illinois, moving to Iowa when a young man. He was married to Miss Linnie Brashears, who survives him at Ottumwa. Later to Missouri and to Texas in 1855 and to Montague county 10 1857. First setting on Clear Creek and moving to old Head of Elm during the dark days of civil strife. He moved to Kansas about 1865 and back to old Montague county in 1876. He then lived for thirty years on Post Oak Tavern Prairie thence to Oklahoma a few years ago, where he has made his home since. He is survived by his wife and the following children: John Stump of Mtn. View, Oklahoma, R.D. Stump, Davis Oklahoma, Mrs. S.L. Moore in Estancia, New Mexico; Mrs. D.A. Price in Bonita, TX; Mrs. Fields and Mrs. Curtis in Davis, OK; He was preceeded by son and daughter, Mrs. Jackson who lived in Kansas, and F.B. Stump of Spanish Fort (father of the writer of this sketch). He lived to a ripe old age and spent the greater part of hi time far out on the frontiers. He saw the first train that ever pulled into Indianapolis, remember the old government "Trace" through the wilderness to Hot Springs in 1836, saw Iowa become a great state, crossed the plains from Leavenworth, Ks to Fort Halleck, Nevada 1865, scouted and served with the Texas Rangers 1858-61, was a member of the first Grand Jury ever empaneled in this county, constable of the Forestburg precinct when the war began. Barely escaped with his life from that infamous inquisition that sat at Gaineville and was proud that he voted for Lincoln at Old Head of Elm. In his later days he became a devout Christian and as the years rolled by became more broadened in his view, and kindly disposed to all. And, we are sure that he will be with the Host on the right of the great White Throne at the last Day. Was a member of the FIRST GRAND JUROR ever empanled in Montague Co, TX and served as CONSTABLE of the Forestburg preinct. GREEN HILL CEMETERY davis oklahoma, murry co.
