Jody's absolutely correct. The Tacey family in Central Michigan (to which she clearly limited her reply) is specifically French. We descend from Urbain Tessier-dit-Lavigne who was born in Anjou, France. Though there are other ethnic groups who Anglicized their names to Tacey, they are not related to this specific clan (which is extremely large at over 20,000 descendents).
Some members of the family have been approached by supposed "genealogists" and name specialists (including one in Florida) who insisted that the family is Irish and came up with a concocted tree in order to establish the claim. But real research with original documents make it clear that we are indeed--and without any shadow of a doubt--French/French-Canadian. The Anglicization came from the family's pronunciation of Tessier as Ta-SEE. American clerks and census workers wrote the names as they heard them, which made them official over time. And as Prosper was escaping legal problems in Ontario, he wasn't going to argue the point.
