Can't help you much on the Shelton family, but check Samuel Merritt listed in the 1810 census for Grainger County in the Powder Springs area. Sam Merritt and Peter Wolferbarger are my 5g-grandfathers.

My step-grandmother is a Shelton out of Texas and Oklahoma, but I haven't been able to get her family back very far.
