Hi,
My ggrandfather, Harrison McLaughlin, was a keeper of the tollgate on the Fayetteville highway in about this same time period. He had been a farmer, but became crippled with rheumatism. The tollgate operators lived in a house beside the road or turnpike, and when someone came along, they collected a toll or fare, raised the gate and let the traveler pass. The reason for collecting a toll was to help pay for upkeep on the road.
