James A Carroll - Did he have siblings? b1829 d1899

This is my GG Grandfather married to Elizabeth Jane Lawson, they were married in Mcminn 1849. I have their children, but no information on his (James A) siblings or parents. I've been told he signed up for the Civil War the same day with other Carrolls. They signed in Charleston. I do not know what the A stands for in his name either. I'm writing a book on the Carrolls of East Tennessee and would love to hear from other Carrolls with any information. My Carrolls have been in Bradley County since at least 1850.
