Where to start? Foster/Fowler

I am hoping for some advice on filling in a dimmly understood piece of my ancestor's history.

Jarret(t) and Frederick Foster along with some Fowlers - part of Jarret's extended family- arrived from South Carolina in the late 1820s or maybe 1830s. I have them in Bradley County in the 1840 census, although my great grandfather, Andrew J. was born in McMinn Co. in 1842. By 1846 the family had moved on to Alabama where my great uncle Francis Marion was born in 1846. Jarret and Frederick and families both ended up in wester Missouri by 1850.

I hadn't thought they would have had much time to cut much of a swath but I have recently learned there was a Jarret Foster in Elliot's Co. Lauderdale's Battalion of Tennessee Mounted Infantry during the Cherokee War.

If anyone can help me begin to determine where and how these people of mine lived I would certainly appreciate the advise.

Greg Foster
