I am descended from James Taylor Spurgeon, born 1855, who married Mary Lee Odell, born 1857 in Cocke Co., TN to William Odell and Lavina Webb. James is listed in the census of 1870 in the household of William Vincent, age 90something, born Delaware. James' mother Margaret is listed as the housekeeper for Mr. Vincent. In the household is also brothers John and Thomas, and a sister Miranda E., age 1. A number of we cousins have tried to pool our oral family history and all we really know is that James' mother's name was Margaret and that he had two brothers named Thomas and John. We beleived that both Thomas and John moved to Missouri and stayed there. I have found Thomas, I believe in Wayne Co., MO in 1900 with mother Margaret Spurgeon in the household. I am looking for anything that may help us find who the father of James Taylor Spurgeon was. I cannot find Margaret in the 1860 census when she would have had James and John in the household with her (prob. unless they lived with someone else). Does anyone have any oral history that may include gossip or ANYTHING either positive or negative about the Spurgeons? I cannot find a link to the other Spurgeon families in Sevier Co. and the ones who were in Cocke Co. later, altho I feel sure that there is one. Without a father for James, we are stuck! Thank you Mona Spuregeon Herrin Notify Administrator about this message?
