Laura Jane STAFFORD, b. 17 Jan 1872, NC, my great grandmother, was raised by Louisa GREEN(E) STORY(IE) in Watauga County, NC. Louisa Greene Story was the widow of Jesse Story, who died in the Civil War. Census records indicate that Laura Jane was her daughter, but I have come to believe that Laura Jane may have been a child brought to Louisa to raise. I believe this because she held firmly to her maiden name of STAFFORD during her life. Had she been born out of wedlock, she would have been known by her mother's surname of Story. Thomas STAFFORD, b. 1813, VA, d. Cocke Co, TN bef. 1880, and Delilah (Unknown), b. abt. 1814, TN or GA, d. after 1880, Bakersville, Mitchell Co, TN, had the following children: James A.W. STAFFORD, b. 1842, Joseph M. STAFFORD, b. 1844, Sarah E. STAFFORD, b. 1847, George STAFFORD, b. 1849, Senia STAFFORD, b. 1852 and Howard Clark STAFFORD, b. 1853, all in Tennessee. Joseph M. STAFFORD, a Civil War veteran and school teacher, married Elizabeth GREEN(E), Louisa's sister, of Watauga Co, NC, bef. 1880. The settled in Bakersville, Mitchell Co, NC where they had in their household in the 1890 census, an adopted son by the name of Henry ROSE. I believe the GREEN Family of Cocke Co, TN has it's roots in the GREEN(E) Family of Jersey Settlement, Rowan Co, TN. Since there were STAFFORD, GREEN or GREENE and ROSE Families in Cocke County, Tennessee pre and post Civil War, Laura Jane STAFFORD and Henry ROSE may well be connected to them and they to each other. I look forward to hearing from anyone who might have a thread of information that will help me prove my theory. Janelle W.
