Seeking information on Civil War veteran, Charles E. JENNINGS (caucasian, b. c1842 in New York, d. 22 February 1889 at Calistoga, Napa County, California. Obit states that he was wounded at the Battle of Lookout Mountain (Chattanooga, TN, Nov. 1863). He was a native of NY, but seems to have had close ties to TN, so either Union or C.S.A. service is possible. Family reportedly came to CA circa 1877. He left a destitute widow and five children after his sudden death. The widow was a Tennessee native (m. Jennings there), who intended to return to that state to live with her parents. Deceased's father was living in NY City, and was expected to pay for the widow's return to TN. Widow was probably Martha J. JENNINGS, who appears in Civil District 12, Crockett Co., TN, in the 1900 census with children Mattie (b. 1880 in OR), Stephen G. (b. 1887 in CA), William W. (b. 1889 in TN). In 1920, Martha appears in the same district in the home of her daughter, Ollie CURTIS (b. c1876 in TN). Charles E. JENNINGS was buried at Calistoga Pioneer Cemetery on 24 February 1889. There is no grave marker, and the exact grave location is unknown. As a veteran, he may be elligible for a VA headstone if more details of his service can be found. Thanks for any help!
