Death of Geo. McLean
"Uncle" George McLean as he was familiarly known to all who knew him, died at his home near Westel Sunday last after an illness of several months. The funeral took place Monday evening at Westel and was largely attended.
Mr. McLean was born at Ardree, Penth Lanarkshire, Scotland, March 14, 1841 and was 67 years and 3 days old at the time of death. While yet a young man he left his home in Scotland and came to this country settling in Canada and after a few years he came to Pennsylvania, remaining there until 1871 when he removed to Tennessee and located in Rockwood where he married. His widow and eight children, five boys and three girls survive.
Mr. McLean was (unreadable words) employed by the Roane County Iron Company (unreadable words). He was an experienced miner and was thoroughly conversant of the coal formations in the mountains in and around this section. He was a man of temperate habits and had accumulated considerable property. While not a rich man, he was in comfortable circumstances. He was honest and upright in his dealings with his fellowman and held the confidence and esteem of all who knew him.

THE COAL CREEK WAR
Coal Creek Valley was the scene of an armed rebellion against the state by free miners seeking an end in the common practice of leasing convicts in coal companies. On October 31, 1891, the convict laborers at Briceville were freed by armed miners. The revolt was subdued by the state militia, but led to the eventual abolition of the "convict lease system" and the establishment of Brushy Mountain State Prison in 1898.
