Sarah McGirk Graham and her sons and grandchildren at Campground Cemetery

I have pasted the following message on the GRAHAM GENFORUM and RUSHING GENFORUM and wish to post here for future GRAHAM searchers

Campground Cemetery is the major cemetery serving the Garrett Community of Decatur County, Tennessee. Along with Bear Creek and Duke's Chapel (in Henderson County), it also serves the Beacon Community. The cemetery is located at Campground Cumberland Presbyterian Church which formed in 1841. This cemetery probably is older and may have originated as a Rushing family cemetery. The cemetery is indicated on the U.S.G.S. Scotts Hill quadrangle (1986).
Campground Cemetery appears to be well maintained. However, there are two major problems. At one time there were many fieldstones here, particularly near the southwest corner of the part of the cemetery enclosed by the driveway loop constructed in the late 1980s. I remember playing among them in the early 1960s out near the cedar trees marking the graves for Nancy Rushing and Calvin Rushing. Many of the remaining fieldstones have been laid flat and are now disappearing. Some of the older graves in the cemetery most likely have been lost to new burials. The other problem is that the older marble markers at some time (probably early 1960s) were cleaned by sandblasting. The sand blasting damaged the surfaces of the markers and exposed then to accelerated erosion. Now many names are inscriptions are almost unreadable. Some can be identified only by comparing barely readable bits of dates with a record made in 1976. Of all nineteenth century cemeteries in the area, the nineteenth century markers here are in the worst condition.
David Donahue recorded Campground Cemetery May 20, 1990; updated in about September 1997; and checked and updated it in December 2003. Margaret Alexander and Blanche Tuten recorded Campground Cemetery July 20, 1976. Their record appears in Decatur County, Tennessee Cemetery Records by the Captain Nathaniel A. Wesson Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Parsons, Tennessee, 1984, pp. 92-111. Reference is made to this earlier record where appropriate.

Graham, William, Dec. 3, 1810-Jan. 10, 1859
The above is pasted from TNGENWEB and is only a partial listing of the burials in CAMPGROUND CEMETERY AT DECATURVILLE TN.

Sarah McGirk Graham information from her headstone at Campground is exactly:

................Born Nov 9 1783
................departed this earth
................Aug 2 1849

This was very clear on her stone last time I was there in May 1997 before my mom passed in 1999. I don't know how many different ways that can be said - it is fact from my personal observation and that of any number of my kinfolks - with me that day were Dorla Swift Hanna of Scotts Hill any my mom. Jane Graham Craig of Franklin TN and Ben Frank Brasher and W.J. Brasher, son of W.J. Brasher have all documented this in the past.

The first burial at Campground near Decaturville was not Sarah's son William Graham who was born Dec 3 1810 and died Jan 10 1859. Sarah was buried Aug 2 1849 and I would imagine there were others before she was buried. Her sons buried there are listed in my message that is pasted a few paragraphs below here.

I will send you what I have on the Brasher to your email address. None of which is my own research. James Oren Brasher, my uncle, was the son of Walter Jesse (Jesse-another popular name in my family) who was the son of Philip who was the son of Walter who was son of Isaac. I personally know of the Brasher buried at Decaturville and in Decatur County and beyond that I can't say.

I suspect more than one Sarah McGirk Graham and that both of these lines - Decatur and Hardin County are true. I would invite any one to go to Campground at Decaturville and take the time to document the Graham there. I don't know where the Sarah at Hardin County is said to be buried - I haven't seen burial location information online yet.

Hello John Fox (and all),

While reading your postings regards SWIFT and FIELDER, I came upon your GRAHAMs. I am searching for my Wayne Co TN GRAHAM's origins and thought to ask if your GRAHAM folks went on to Jefferson Co TN and/or Giles Co TN and then Wayne and Decatur Co TN? One of the inherited family trees I have shows a MEBANE grandparent also. I have an uncle named Fielder Swift (deceased) who lived at Scotts Hill (Decatur Co) TN his entire life, he married my mother's sister, Hazel Reaves, whose mother (my grandmother) was Mura Alice GRAHAM. Mura Alice was the daughter of James P. Graham (buried in Wayne Co TN) and Sarah Frances "Fanny" GRIMES of Wayne Co Tn. James P. Graham's father was James P. Graham and his mother was Sarah McGirk. Sarah McGirk Graham is buried at Campground Cemetery at Decaturville, Decatur Co, TN, info from her tombstone: B Nov 9 1783 departed this earth Aug 2 1849. Her sons also buried at Campground at Decaturville TN are Richard A. Graham 1821 - 1867; William Graham born Dec 3 1810 - died Jan 10 1859; James P. Graham B: Nov 1812 - D: Apr 8 1861. Several Graham children/infants are also buried at Campground as are Finley/Findley and Galbraith also related to Graham. Sarah McGirk Graham's husband, James P. Graham, died 1827-1829 and is buried at Giles Co TN.

I am looking to find out for sure where in NC my Graham lived before moving to TN. Part of our family says the Graham at Thyatria are our family and then, again, it is also said that the Mecklenburg Graham are our family. After reading all the posted messages it is really confusing. Your Orange Co NC messages mention our common surnames so I thought perhaps you would know.
