I have been told by several people in different parts of the U.S. that my great, great grandmother, Martha Henley, was the daughter of Capel Henley. I originally thought she was born around 1838, but two of the three census I can actually find her in she was born 1833. I found Capel in the Dekalb County, Tn. census in 1840 and he had two sons under the age of 5 and one 5-10. There were no daughters. Yet in the 1850 Census he had Catherine 12, Charlotte 10, Parzada 7, Mary J. 5 and Nancy 2. There are no sons. Martha was already married. At the very least Catherine should have showed up in the 1840 Census. I am wondering if the census taker didn't make a mistake about the sexes of the children. If he was told who was in the house without actually seeing them, he could have mistakenly written down that they were boys and not girls?? This still leaves me with an extra person floating around out there, but at least it would explain Martha and Catherine. It's been a long time since I posted and I just wanted to see if there was anyone out there who could shed a little light on this. Capel fought in the Civil War, does anyone know if he or Elizabeth ever filed for a pension? Thanks!
