Hi: There were just six Poor(e) families in the 1840 Fentress Co, TN census. If we assume (dangerous) that James Poor was the son of one of these six, and take a look at their families in 1840 to see which have sons in the age category of James born abt 1829-1832, we may be able to weed it down to a few. I will list them from oldest to youngest.

1) Joseph Poor b. 1770-1780 md Mary _____. The 1840 said he was 60-70 and had living with him a female 20-30 and a male 0-5. His only identified son was Calaway Poor b. 1809-1810. He does not appear to have a son of the right age to be your James Poor b. 1829-1832.

2)Moses Poor b. 1782-1783 NC md Mary Miller. The 1840 said he was 50-60, his wife 60-70, female 30-40, female 20-30, female 15-20, male 10-15 (Clayton), male 10-15 (Moses Jr.), female 5-10. Researchers state his family contained:
1. Henry Richard Poor b. 1805-1806
2. James M. Poor b. 1809-1810
3. Luvina Poor b. 1811-1812
4. Jeremiah O. Poor b. 1819-1820
5. Sarah Matilda Poor b. 1822-1823
6. Clayton Poor b. 1827-1828
7. Moses Poor Jr. b. 1831-1832
From this we see that he had a son named James M. Poor b. 1809-1810 and md Delilah Caroline Miller, so the James b. 1829-1832 is not likely to be his son.

3) Henry Poor was 40-50 in the 1840 census. He had one son b. 1825-1830, another son b. 1830-1835 and a couple of daughters. I do not know who these sons were, but he is certainly a possible candidate to be father of your James.

4) Mames M. Poore b. 1809-1810 was the son of Moses Poor mentioned above. He had 10 identified children. He had a son named James b. 1851-1852, so he does not appear to be the son of your James.

5) Benjamin Poor b. 1810-1820 (20-30 in 1840) only had one daughter and no sons enumerted with him in 1840, so does not appear to be your James' father.

6) Jesse Poor b. 1810-1820 (20-30 in 1840) had no children, so does not appear to be father of your James.

So, having looked at this, #3 above -- Henry Poor is the most likely candidate for father of your James. This obviously is not conclusive, but may give you a focus. Of course, if his father was not in 1840 Fentress, then this does not hold water.

I would love to learn more about all who descend from you James Poor. I have names of 8 children, but would love complete dates and places of birth, marriage, death and all descend from them.

Thanks and love, Bruce -- send info to bruceyork@cox.net
