A Snapshot of History!

As I study 1850 Gibson County, adding maiden names, cemetery
information, stories, and correcting typos to those listed. I thought
I might mention some findings in District 9 ( of which I am partial for
my gg grandfather being listed in it.) I would hope that as people look
at a Census, they would hold a reverance for those listed. To some
what appears to be a lot of names on a page are real family to others.
They lived, loved, struggled, and died. As I study more and more details,
I wonder how many stories escape us without notice. I thought I should
mention just a couple here:

1854 O'Daniel Tragedy

1850 Gibson County Dist. 9 Census Line 1774
John O'Daniel b. 01-20-1805 d. 12-7-1860
Clara Ann O'Daniel b. 11-30-1812 d. 08-13-1854
Giles O'Daniel ??
Ann O'Daniel b. 11-30-1830 d. 08-2-1854
Eliza O'Daniel b. 06-30-1832 d. 08-18-1854
Rachael O'Daniel b. 02-21-1834 married M.L. Sloan on 12-21-1854 d. 09-6-1866
(Rachael and M. L. Sloan had a son John L. Sloan died 3 1/2 months old-
06-16-1866 to 10-4-1866 This places Rachael and baby John dying close
together. ) Moving down the list of children, if the rest survived to adulthood.
Henry O'Daniel lost most of his family at age 2 and his father at age 12.
Oh the sorrow that this family saw.
Does anyone know the details (What Happened?)to fill in the rest of this story??

1851 Hopper Tradgedy

1850 Gibson County Dist.9 Census Line 1788
Absalom Clark Hopper b. 10-22-1808 d. 09-15-1851 (next year)
Ollie B. Moore Hopper
son: Gilliam Hopper named after Absalom's father
and the list goes on....
A.C. Hopper died in a gun battle with his younger brother,
Gilliam Jr. known as "Dock Brown" the outlaw of Grayson Co., KY.
Gilliam had robbed and killed many in his Kentucky escapades. Sounded
like he probably killed Gilliam Sr. and another brother as well. Absalom
killed Gilliam, but not without taking a bullet that hours later would end his life.
So when you see Absalom Hopper in 1860 Gibson Census-1256-1304
remember that he was only a child of 7, when his father risked and lost his
life making north west Tennessee and southwest Kentucky a better place.

Everyone listed in our Gibson County families has a story to tell. They had
good and bad times. They were REAL pioneers. Hey, they all knew Davy Crockett
before he had a movie about his life!

If you haven't compared the marriage listings to the children and their neighbors
that's another fascinating study. A Census is a snapshot of History! Our Gibson
County, Tennessee families endured much. Share the stories, correct all the typos,
and be grateful that so many have made it so easy for us to search for our family
history. Thanks to all who have spent so much time putting so much information
at our internet grasp!!!!!!!!!
George
