Smith -- Powers
Posted by: Alan Smith (ID *****0563) Date: February 06, 2006 at 01:21:53

I just found out that my great-grandmother's maiden name was Powers (I was previously given another name (Decell sp?)but found evidence to the contrary)

The farthest back I can go is the 1880 Census for Perry Co., TN my G-Grandmother is living with her mother only

It shows:
1880 Perry Co., TN
Powers, Mary A. age 36 born Mississippi
Powers, Georgia A. (daughter) age 15 born Mississippi

In the 1900 Census my G-Grandmother has already married my G-Grandfather (married 01-March-1893), and living with them are their 2 children and "Mother-In-Law" Mary Powers

It shows: 1900 Gibson Co., TN
Smith, H.M. (Head) Dec 1847 age 52 (This was "Hite" or "Hiram")
Georgia (Wife) Dec 1864 age 35
Eddie (Son) Dec 1893 age 6
Meary (daughter) Mar 1896 age 4
Powers, Mary (Mother-In-Law)Feb 1845 age 55

It says that Mary Powers had 3 children and 2 are still living.
The entire page of this Census for Gibson Co TN shows that every person on it, and every parent of every person on it, as being born in TN, which I believe is untrue.

I've been told that Mary Powers died 31-May-1909, but my source also said her birthday was 27-Feb-1842, so I can't confirm the accuracy. I was also told concerning Mary Powers "I think she is buried Milan TN near church" which doesn't help me much (I'm in Washington State)

Does anyone have any information about the family of Mary A. Powers and Georgia Powers Smith?
