Researching the McClure family from the following counties in Tennesee -- Gibson, Madison, Dyer and Obion. Also, trying to locate the county in Kentucky where James McClure was born. He was born about 1821. His middle name may be James Cash McClure, but we have not proven this as fact. September 22, 1846 James McClure married Nancy N. Watt in Tennessee. She was born April 7, 1828 and was the daughter of James N. Watt. There is a headstone in Hopewell Cemetery in Gibson County with a James Cash McClour. It is located between W. W. Cash and Watt family members. Nancy Watt's father donated the land for the Hopewell Cemetery, so it seems likely our James could be James Cash McClour (McClure). We are very interested in knowing why James McClure died so young. In the 1850 Gibson County, TN Census James McClure was 29 years old. The census states he was born in Kentucky. His wife, Nancy N. (Watt) McClure, was listed at 22 years old. She was born in Tennessee. They had one son, James Samuel McClure, who was 3 years old. (The son, James Samuel, married Sarah Catherine Karnes on March 21, 1867). From a file in the Madison County, TN Library we found the following information: Whereas on Dec. 26, 1852, JAMES WATT died leaving 200 acre tract in Madison Co., Tenn. which in his will be gave to his undersigned hrs. THOMAS WALKER was appointed to divide Watt's lands. One lot to EMELA COLE. Balance of land divided into lots: 1, to JAMES MATHEWS; 2, to MARY NEVILL; 3, to PERMELIA HIX; 4, by NARCISSA McCLEWER (McClure). Dec. 2, 1853. Signed, A. T. NEVILL, MARY M. NEVILL (her "x" mark), CYRUS MATHEWS, JANE MATHEWS (her "x" mark), JAS. McCLEWER (McClure), SHEPHERD HIX, MARY McCLURE and PERMELIA T. HIX. Reg Jan. 18, 1854. Note the way Nancy's married name was spelled -- McClewer. In research, it has been found to be spelled several ways. The 1860 Gibson County, TN Census listed: Name: Nancy McClaren (should be McClure) Age in 1860: 30 Birth Year: abt 1830 Birthplace: Tennessee Home in 1860: District 1, Gibson, Tennessee Gender: Female Post Office: Hope Hill James McClaren 39 (McClure) Nancy McClaren 30 (Mcclure) James McClaren 14 (McClure) Martha McClaren 10 (Mcclure) Elizabeth Nevill 18 (She is either Nancy's sister or niece) By 1866, Nancy was a widow. See notes below from marriage records and Goodspeed's History of Tennessee. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Marriage Record: McCLURE, N. N. marries JONES, J. W. 1866 xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Goodspeed's History of Tennessee John F. Jones is a Tennessean born in 1844. His parents, J. W. and Jemima A. (Baird) Jones were born in South Carolina and Tennessee, respectively. They became the parents of twelve children. The father was a prosperous farmer and, after his wife's death in 1862, married N. N. McClure, widow of James McClure. John F. resided with his father until sixteen years of age, then joined the Twelfth Regiment Tennessee Infantry, under Col. Russell, and served until the close of the war. He received a slight wound at Shiloh, and at the battle of Peach Tree Creek lost his left leg. After his return home, he was elected constable of the Thirteenth District, and held the office for eight years, during which time he was united in marriage to Columbia S. Long, daughter of James and Susannah (Jones) Long. She was born in Tennessee, in 1848, and is the mother of four children: James B., Ivie, Irma and Bessie. Mr. Jones has held that office of county register for four years. Since that time he has been engaged in farming. His farm, on which he settled in 1882, is about six miles from the county seat, and consists of 170 acres. The principal products are corn, cotton, small grain and stock. He is a member of the Agricultural Wheel in his district, and in politics has always been a stanch Democrat. 1880 Gibson County Census Records: 1880 GIBSON COUNTY TN CENSUS District No. 13 Milan, TN Transcribed by Linda Cotrell Page # 425A Family # 365 Dwelling # 418 NAME RELATION RACE SEX AGE MARITAL OCCUP POB FPOB MPOB Joseph W. If anyone is connected to this family, please contact me or Jere McClure at Jere1928@aol.com. He is the great great grandsom of James McClure and Nancy Watt of Gibson County, TN. He is the great grandson of James Samuel and Sarah Catherine Karnes McClure of Gibson County. Sometimes, Karnes has been transcribed as Raines -- due to the way it looked in the census and other records. However, we have a copy of the original marriage record and her name was Sarah C. KARNES.
