I - J, Goodspeed Bibliographies, 1887, Gibson County TN Submitted by Vicki Shaffer. Page created by Jane N. Powell "John F. Jones is a Tennessee born in 1844. His parents, J. W. and Jemima A. (Baird) Jones were born in South Carolina and Tennessee, respectively. They became the parents of twelve children. The father was a prosperous farmer and, after his wife's death in 1862, married N. N. McClure, widow of JAMES MCCLURE. John F. resided with his father until sixteen years of age, then joined the Twelfth Regiment Tennessee Infantry, under Col. Russell, and served until the close of the war. He received a slight wound at Shiloh, and at the battle of Peach Tree Creek lost his left leg. After his return home, he was elected constable of the Thirteenth District, and held the office for eight years, during which time he was united in marriage to Columbia S. Long, daughter of James and Susannah (Jones) Long. She was born in Tennessee, in 1848, and is the mother of four children: James B., Ivie, Irma and Bessie. Mr. Jones has held that office of county register for four years. Since that time he has been engaged in farming. His farm, on which he settled in 1882, is about six miles from the county seat, and consists of 170 acres. The principal products are corn, cotton, small grain and stock. He is a member of the Agricultural Wheel in his district, and in politics has always been a stanch Democrat." To whom it may concern: My husband, Jere P. McClure, of Union City and Dyersburg, TN would love to find out how his great great grandfather died. He was James McClure mentioned in the above Goodspeed Bibliographies, 1877, Gibson County, TN. James was born in Kentucky in 1821. He moved to Gibson County, Tennessee and married Nancy Narcissa Watt on September 22, 1846. Nancy N. WATT McClure and James had two known children. They were James Samuel and Martha McClure. James Samuel was married to Sarah Catherine Karnes. They had six children. We don't have any additional information about Martha. James Samuel was born in 1847 and Martha McClure was born in 1850. James, Nancy and their two children were in the 1850 and 1860 census of Gibson County. James died before 1866, because Nancy N. Watt McClure married to Joseph W. Jones in 1866. It seems as if the Civil War would be a logical cause of the death of James McClure. However, we cannot locate any information about him in this material. We have tried to locate records about his death through old newspapers -- to no avail. Any help would be appreciated. There is a James M. McClure buried in Gibson County at Chapel Hill Cemetery. According to the translation on the Chapel Hill Cemetery web site, his name is spelled McClour. There has been a recent correction to his name. Until recently it was listed as James Cash McClour. The cemetery revision shows "James M. McClour". This James McClour/McClure is next to James N. Watt, Jr. We feel J. N. Watt may be Nancy's brother -- since this was her father's name. James N. Watt, Jr. was born 1815 and died 1872. He is buried next to Sarah J. Lyon Watt and their young 12 year old son, James W. Watt. Sarah Jane Lyon and James N. Watt were married in Madison County, TN. If anyone can help with these family names, please contact Jere P. McClure. Jere1928@aol.com Thanks, Anna Gayle and Jere McClure Notify Administrator about this message?
