Thanks for your response, Lisa. Yes, I certainly agree there are huge questions caused by the 1860 Gibson Co., TN census for this McDonald family, and I agree that they may possibly be a completely different family than the family in the 1850 Coffee Co. and 1870 and 1880 Gibson Co., TN censuses. However, a couple circumstantial clues lead me to consider that these are all the same family, and that the 1860 Gibson Co., TN census records is an abberration. First, I find no similar families (R. and Belinda McDonald and children) elsewhere in the the records (1850-1880 US census). Second, the head of household for this family in the 1860 census is "R. McDonald," and there is an 8 Aug., 1845 record in Coffee Co., TN where Adam R. McDonald goes by his nickname, "Rank." "Rank" was apparently short for "Rankin" according to another researcher, and, of course, assuming that these two men are one and the same. I think another explantation might be that a neighbor gave the information for this family in the 1860 Gibson Co., TN census for some reason or other, as sometimes happened, I am told, and said neighbor was not very familiar with the family's details. Thanks again for your response. May I ask your interest or connection to this family? Mine is that I believe, and am trying to firm up proof that, the Adam R. McDonald family are of the early Coffee Co., TN bunch, and are therefore some of my "cousins." Best regards, Greg Notify Administrator about this message?
