Whitfield/ Hutton connection, 1910-1930, Prospect

Looking for the connection between the Whitfields and Huttons. In the 1900 census Roscoe Hutton was listed as a boarder with T. Walter and Fannie Whitfield. He is also listed as living with his mother (Ida Medora Childers Hutton, widow) and sisters in the household of E. Benson and Sarah Parsons--the census dates are a month apart. In the 1930 census, he was listed as an orphan while living with the Whitfields. He listed Fannie Whitfield as his closest relative in his WWI Draft Registration. His sister Mary was listed with the Whitfields as a companion in the 1910 census. As far as I can find, there is no known familial relationship. Any information would be extremely helpful.
