William ROBERTS (b 1761/1762 NC) and wife Ann VANDERGRIFF moved to Grainger Co. about 1801 from Washington Co. staying near his VANDERGRIFF in-laws. Known sons: Jacob ROBERTS (b~1788) m Elizabeth GROVES and William A. ROBERTS (b~1801) m Jane BUNCH (b~1811?). 1808 court records show William ROBERTS assigned to a crew with Leonard VANDERGRIFF and John HUNTER building a road to Powder Springs Gap. Leonard married Sally ROBERTS 10 Aug 1804 John HUNTER bondsman, Sally thought to be a daughter of Ann and William. About 1809 the elder William ROBERTS moved to Knox Co. for a year, then to Anderson Co. until 1831. 1830 Anderson Co. census shows sons Jacob and William A. ROBERTS listed next to VADNERGRIFF first cousins, and an unknown John ROBERTS (brother?). A Ninion ROBERTS (another possible brother?) listed on the same census is among the family later Hamilton Co. A partial index extraction for the 1810 census lists John HUNTER near BEELORS (married into VANDERGRIFFs) and Jacob VANDERGRIFF (father or son?), Gilbert VANDERGRIFF (s/o Jacob, witness to brother-in-law William ROBERTS 1832 Rev. War pension application). Listed next to Gilbert is Samuel MERIT with Peter WOLFERSBARGER - these are also my 5g-grandfathers through a marriage 90+ years later of my g-grandparents in Missouri - a small world! My 3g-grandmother Jane BUNCH is assumed to be from Grainger, Knox or Anderson counties. I have been able to identify that David BUNCH (about same approximate age) is a probable brother, he appears to have married Lucy ROBERTS (d/o Jacob ROBERTS and Elizabeth GROVES). Other than the VANDERGRIFFs, I do not know the parents of most of the above listed. Any additional information appreciated. Thanks - Dan Notify Administrator about this message?
