Shaw/Ratledge

James Shaw was 55 b. NC on the 1850 census of Greene Co., his wife Edith [Ratledge] was 45 b. NC. They had appeared on the 1830 Greene Co. census, pg. 172, living next to her father, James Ratledge. They came from Rowan Co., NC originally, more recently from Iredell Co. NC. James had signed a quit claim there to his brother Solomon for his father William Shaw's estate in 1848.

James and Edith Shaw's known children:
1. William Shaw b. 1840 - gone after 1860 - Civil War?
2. James M. Shaw b. 1844 m. Eliza C.
3. Elisha/Elijah Shaw b. 1846 m. Susanna Lutrell
4. Pinckney Shaw b. 1848 m. Martha Emmert

By 1870 Edith is a widow with youngest son Pinkney M. age 22 still at home. James and wife Eliza and Elijah and wife Susan nearby married. The P.O. is Little Chucky in Dist. #5. A cemetery record for the Pine Grove Cemetery shows some of this family and an abstract of the death record for Pinkney Shaw shows his parent's names as James Shaw and Edith Johnson Ratledge. Edith named for her mother who may have died at her birth.
Edith's brother Daniel L. Ratledge [my gr-gr grandfather] left the family and moved first to Wilson Co.,TN - married there to Malinda Johnson, then to Douglas Co., MO by 1860. He named a son James Shaw Ratledge.
Anyone with any connection to this family, I'd love to hear from you.
