I am interested in collaborating on the ancestry of this Britton branch. I am working in Chester County, PA, in the 1600s and 1700s on the Britton line (and Gibsons). I know that the Samuel Britton who married Mary Burtis, widow of Robert Worthington, in Frederick,VA in the 1730s was from Chester -- he sent a certificate from Oppeckon,VA to Chester,PA in 1737 (Quaker). This Samuel would appear to be the son of Peter Britton who died 11/22/1710 in Chester,PA -- his will mentioned children Elizabeth Britton Horbury, Deborah Britton Philips, Thomas, Samuel, and Jonathan. It is thought that Peter was likely the son of Cananuiel Britton who died in Chester,PA in 1682 (also known to be a Quaker), who is known to be the son of Richard Britton/Brittaine of Batcombe, Somersetshire, England. The problem is that there is no James mentioned in the will. Perhaps Cananuiel had another son who also named children Samuel and he had a son James. My interest is in the Brittons of Bucks,PA and Frederick,VA. John Britton moved to Bucks,PA by 1731. His son Joseph Britton and wife Mary Gibson bought land in Frederick,VA in 1752, and their son Jesse Britton and wife Anne Gibson lived between Frederick,VA and Bucks,PA in the 1770s-1790, when they moved permanently to Frederick,VA. In 1807 they moved to Pickaway,OH. I am trying to learn John's heritage, and am searching Chester,PA for that. He could be the Jonathan in Peter's will above, as Deborah Britton's husband, John Philips, was from Bucks,PA and she moved there after marriage. So, the short part is that I would love to share any information we both have on Chester,PA at this time. Thanks! Notify Administrator about this message?
