hello, I know this area well. the families that I know of best, are the Wooten, Winton, Cunninghams and Lusk.
if you look at a present-day map of Grundy Co. and locate Altamont, TN in almost the center of the county. you will find hwy 108 going from Altamont down the mountain to Viola which is just over the county line in to Warren Co. TN. the road going down the mountain starts its descent right after passing the Hixson/Skymont community which would be on the right side of the road if you were heading north on hwy 108. the descent takes up about 3 miles of road. at the bottom of the mountain lived the families of Cunninghams, Wootons, Wintons and Lusks.
from the place where the descent from the top of the mountain stops in the valley to where the three counties intersect is about 2 miles. going west on Wesley Chapel Road which will turn into Lusk Road as you go over the county line is only 1/3 mile from hwy 108. then you turn L on to Hillsboro/Viola Road in Coffee Co. this road will take you into Manchester and Hillsboro, and on around the Cove into Pelhem, which is back in Grundy Co.
the reason the families are found in differnet counties in different years is not that they moved it is because the county lines changes between these years.
my g-grandfather's half-brother George Cunningham married Daisy Wooton and they all lived in this area. the Lusks moved up the mountain and farmed a large area just at the crest of the mountain, and the family is still there.

I know it is all confusing, but you have to research Warren Grundy and Coffee Co. as well as Cannon and White Co. for many of these families.
