I am searching for information on the Gann Family, originally from Hamilton Co.,Tn. I have a pension deposition which, in part states; "14 Dec.,1896,St.Francois Co.,Mo.,My name is James Gann. I am past 80 years old. I live near Elvins post office in this St.Francois Co.,Mo..I volunteered for,in 1836 when about 19 years old,for the U.S.Army at Chatanooga to quiet and remove the Cherokee Indians. I was born in Hamilton Co.,Tn.,(about 1815)...until about 35 or 40 years old when I came to Missouri.(about 1850-55?...1st to Washington Co.,Mo.,then to St.Francois c.1895)...2nd land warrant was for 120 acres which came to me from my brother,John who had it forwarded from Harrison. Signed, JamesXGann.Sr.,I have been married to and maiden name Sarah Gann,2nd cousin to whom I was married at Hamilton Co.,Tn. on the ?day of 1839 or 1840, that my wife is now dead, having died on ? of Sep. ? that I have not since remarried. July 31,1903 above named pensioner has been dropped because of death,24 July,1903."
This deposition shows James as having been born in Hamilton and having a brother,John. I can only find him and family on 1870 and 1880 Washington Co.,Mo. census listings and not in 1900. He gives his age in 1870 as 58,(1812-13) in 1880 as 65(1815-16). He says he's " past 80 years on 14 Dec.,1896...19 in 1836"(1817-18). So by these records James was b.c.1812-1818. I have limited access to census info and am trying to find the father of James Gann,b.c.1812-1818. He would also have a brother,John, both possibly listed of ages 0-20 on 1820 Hamilton census. I was able to find an 1830 Hamilton census, but no luck. Also any other info on his early family would be much appreciated...Al
