Have you checked the family tree info on Ancestry.com? There is a Carl Henry SHAMBAUGH, born 1870 in Pennsylvania, with what appears to be a first wife and several children.

This first wife later remarries.

The Carl you found in St. Elmo was in his second marriage.

Carl's death is shown in the 1940's, but no location is given.
