Hello Mr. Gray, I saw your posted message in the New England Ancestors magazine and decided to take a look. Your grandfather appears to be pretty elusive. In the SSDI looking for any GRAY individual with a DOB of July 1872 I got only one Charles Gray, born 19 July 1872, died Mar 1865. You said that your grandfather might have lived until around 1963. Although the DOB is 19 July and not 25 Jul it might be worth to order the SSA application. My wife's grandfather was a blonde englishhman with blue eyes and he was marked as "black" in his SSA application. You never know. If this is the right person, it will give you some new clues.

Good luck,
Francisco
