Nicole,

I have made a little progress since my initial posting.

The "other" Roberts family in Hamilton Co. might be distant cousins to the Falling Water clan both originating from N. Carolina.

From the 1840 Census District 2 Falling Water/Roberts Mill area of Hamilton Co:

"H" Roberts - Little doubt now this is Ninion Roberts
Wm (A.) Roberts (aka Robbirds) - wife Jane Bunch (my 3-grandparents)
Jacob Roberts - proven brother of William A. Roberts; both are sons of William Roberts (Rev. War pension #S17054) and Ann Vandergriff
David Bunch - brother of Jane Bunch; he first married Lucy Roberts - dau of Jacob Roberts and Elizabeth Grove(s)
Joseph Roberts - unidentified and no addtional information found
C. (Caswell) Roberts - son of Jacob Roberts and Elizabeth Grove(s)
Wm (G.) Roberts - son of Jacob Roberts and Elizabeth Grove(s)

1830 census for Anderson Co, TN:

The Jacob and Wm (A.) Roberts listed near the Vande(r)griffs are the same as above. Ninion is in the same county, his Ashlock neighbors are directly related to the wife of one of the Vadergriffs.

I am 99% sure that Ninion Roberts is another son of William Roberts and Ann Vandergriff, but I can't find anything yet directly proving it as a fact. There is an Anderson Roberts that is also in Hamilton Co whose widow and children are shown in Falling Water in the 1850 census. I am suspicious, but can't find enough circumstantial evidence to make any conclusions about Anderson being directly related.

The elder William Roberts is not found on the 1830 or 1840 census, though his pension app lists his location. He, sons Jacob and William A. and children, most of Jacob's line, and some other Vandergriff realtives (Garret Vandergriff, Joel Hall, Uriah Gann) moved to SW Missouri between 1840-1842. David Bunch ended up in Grayson County, TX by 1854. Ninion's family stayed in the Falling Water area, and it appears that Ninion, son (Emmanuel) Emerson and maybe Anderson Roberts were involved in the Roberts Mill there.

I do believe that the elder William and possibly others first settled in the north end of Hamilton Co. (Sale Creek area?), Jacob bought his land in Falling Water in 1836 closely followed by Ninion (who was still listed as a resident of Anderson Co at that time).

Dan
