Elbert and Elby Mullins

A couple of other Mullins descendants and I are trying to straighten out some confusion

over two individuals with similar names and dates, and we're hoping we can get some help

from other researchers. There were 2 different Mullinses, Elbert and Elis/Elby, living in

the same time period, close in age. One was the son of John and Mahala Mullins, the other

apparently the son of Nancy Mullins, who was supposedly the sister to John Mullins (making

them cousins). Both of these men had a son named Thomas. The question is which of these men

was the son of John and Mahala?
In the charts that I have posted on various sites, I mistakenly combined the children of

both men. I believe William Grohse's papers were the source of this confusion. I've since

come to realize that there were two different Elbe/Elis. One of them, usually refered to as

Elbert, was married to Nancy Jane Gibson, the other, often called Eli or Elby, was married

to Eliza Seals. Below is some data;

1850 Hancock Co., TN

#105/105 Clarah Collins, 80, f, --, widdow, $100, VA
Nancy Mullins, 25, f, KY
Elizabeth ", 9, f, TN
Mary Ann, 5, f, TN
Henry, 2, m, TN
Elbert, 3/12, m, TN

#106/106 John Mullins, 27, m, --, farmer, $100, TN1
Mahala, 25, f, TN
Jane, 9, f, TN
Sally, 8, f, TN
Milla, 7, f, TN
Larkin, 6, m, TN2
James, 5, m, TN
Burton, 4, m, TN
Eaby, 2, m, TN
Richard, 4/12, m, TN

The Clarah Collins listed would be Irish Jim Mullins' wife. I don't know why she's

listed as Collins here. It may have been her maiden name. Wm Grohse said her maiden name

was Martin, but other sources say she was a Collins. Notice that these two families lived

next to each other and both had a son close in age with similar names (Eaby/Elby in John's

family, Elbert in Nancy's)

1860 Hancock Co., TN
# 708/679 Nancy Mullins, 40,f,
Polly An, 14, f

Elizabeth, 10, f

#711/682 John Mullins, 51, m, farming 1000/1000, TN
Mahaly, 36, f, household, TN
Sally, 17, f, TN
Molly, 14, f, fitified, TN
Larkin, 13, m, TN
James, 12, m, TN
Burton, 11, m, TN
Elby, 9, m, TN
Richard, 8, m, TN
Maryan, 7, f, TN
Jeremiah, 6, m, TN
John, 5, m, TN
Reuben, 4,m, TN
Oliver, 2, m,TN

To add to the confusion, Nancy's family is listed with an Elizabeth, but no Elbert! I've

checked the original censuses, and the 1860 DEFINATELY has Elizabeth listed in Nancy's

family and listed as female, but the 1850 census definately lists an Elbert as a male!

1870

#126/123 Mullins, Elias, 22,m, W, farm laborer, TN
Mary E., 18, f, w, keeping house

#61/60 Mullins, Polly, f W kp hse $10, TN
Harrison, 22 m W farm Labourer, TN
Elbert, 21 m W farm labourer TN
Ellen, 19, f W Domestic Labourer, TN

Elby/Elias is married to Mary Eliza Seals by 1870, and the other Elbert is living with

his siblings. He marries Nancy Jane Gibson the next year;

Elbert Mullins
Nancy Jane Gibson
7/20/1871

By 1880, one of the Elbes has been killed, and Nancy Jane Gibson remarried to Madison

Mullins, and Nancy Jane's children with Elbert are listed as Step children.
I believe the Eli that married Eliza Seals is the son of John and Mahala Mullins, but

another researcher, whose opinion I really respect, is unconvinced. Is there anybody that

can help us on this puzzle? Any documentation, clues, etc will be considered carefully.

Thanks in advance.
Kevin Mullins
