Since you are a male, you can test both your father's line and your mother's line. You carry your father's y-DNA and your mother's mt-DNA. In effect your would be checking your father to his father to his father, etc., and your mother to her mother to her mother, etc. This may or may not be useful to you, depending upon what you want to know. The cost is based upon what you want to test and what you can afford. You can spring for the DNAPlus test or something less, depending upon how much you want to spend.
