I did a little more checking and found a John Mills in 1880 in District 13 of Hancock County. He was 19 and living with his parents, W.R. (age 40) and Abby (age 38). All were born in Tennessee. I wonder if he could be the father of your John H. Mills. Do you know Nancy's maiden name? Also, two things I didn't mention from the previous records: 1) John H. Mills said in 1900 that he and his parents were born in Tennessee, and 2) Nancy indicated in 1900 and 1910 that she had given birth to two children of which only one (John H.) was living.
