I am searching for the birthplace and family of my gg-grandmother who may be from Alabama, Tennessee or even Missouri. I need help from descendents of a Hackney/Doles family especially or Day(sp?) family. Her given name was Elizabeth/Alice and her maiden name is Mills as far as we know. She was an orphan and at least one parent was probably Cherokee. She ended up in Hardeman county TN no later than 1910 and perhaps much earlier. In 1900 and previous years I have yet to find her or her son anywhere. In 1910 she was living in the William P and Gillie J(ane) Hackney household in district 7. Also, living there was William's daughter Elizabeth Doles, grandson William B Doles, hired man John Day(sp?) as well as Cleveland W(ashington) Mills her son. Here Elizabeth and C W are from Tennessee. Their last name is transcribed at ancestry.com as Miller with Mills being the alternate spelling. In 1920 William and Jane Hackney, daughter Lizzie and grandson Willie Doles are next door neighbors of Cleveland and his wife and family. His wife is Nora Elizabeth Mathis. Her parents were Benjamin Franklin Mathis and Rosalee Doles. This time it's old district 13. Here C W says he and his parents are from Tennessee. By 1930 the Hackney's disappear from the census. This is again district 7, Walnut Grove precinct. This is near Hornsby. Here C W says he is from Tennessee and his parents are from "Mossuri". Perplexing. Cleveland died in 1942. His mother seemed to have passed between 1910 and '20. They are buried at Walnut Grove cemetery. The reason I mentioned Alabama is that that is where family traditions says C W's mother came from.
