I don't know your genealogy. Not everyone there is as unfriendly as you experienced. But, many are very hostile to outsiders, expecially if you have a Melungeon in your past. The same is true for Hancock, Wise, Lee, and Scott counties. Most of the records of Hawkins County are available on microfilm from the State archives. I would go that route. You have to be very careful about early family genealogies in Hawkins County. Many of the very early ones are wrong, and a few are actually bogus. Welcome to Applachian genealogy.
