John Shields, Corps of Discovery

John Shields, b. 1769 either Augusta VA or Sevier Co. TN, lived with other family members in the Pigeon Forge, Sevier Co. TN area, then was in KY when he was recruited as a blacksmith by Lewis and Clark for the Corps of Discovery. He was the oldest member to begin the journey (Carbonneau was older, but joined later) and had a wife and daughter or two. As a distant cousin of his mother, Nancy Stockton, I seek more information about him, his life and family after about 1808. Certain biographical sketches suggest that John Shields died Indiana 1808 or in Sevier Co. TN 1815, both unconfirmed. Does anyone know if he lived longer? On the 1860 Jefferson County, TN census, a John Shields, 91, b. TN, a millwright, was living with the Tittsworth family in Jefferson Co. Jefferson Co. is east of and a parent county of Sevier Co., TN; settlers in the eastern part of Sevier Co., like the Shields, had many family and land holding connections to Jefferson Co. If anyone has info on his life after the CofD journey, please share. Patricia Ross Parker
