Among the Lincoln Co., Marriages is listed a marriage of George Small and Lucy Summerford, 12 Nov 1865. This has puzzled me for several years since I wasn't able to identify which "George" and which "Lucy" were involved. I believe I have the answer. The TN Marriages Records 1780-2002 lists the marriage of Cezar Small (not George Small) and Lucy Summerford, married Lincoln Co., TN 12 Nov 1865. This the exact date and place for the entry in March’s “Official Marriage Records 1838-1880 Early TN Marriages, Vol. 1 (grooms), p. 498. It appears that the Marches may have incorrectly copied from the original records and James D. Small in his excellent "Small" coverage might have copied from the Marches. The Lincoln Co., TN Marriage (interactive) site probably copied from the Marches as well. At any rate the actual records show the name is Cezar Small with the notation “fmc” and Lucy Summerford “fwc” m. 12 Nov 1865. I contacted the TN State Library and Archives today for an explanation regarding those notations. I’ve coped the reply below. So Cezar (a. k. a. George in March's book and James D. Small’s material) and Lucy are African-American. Dixie (see below) Dear Patron, fmc = free man of color fwc = free woman of color Definitions found on http://www.genealogy-quest.com/glossaries/abbrev1.html Also mentioned on the following website http://www.thenashvillecitycemetery.org/aa-introduction.htm F.
