Samuella Newsom's father & grandfather

I've read the story of how Samuella Newsom cried so hard, when the Union army wanted to take her horse, that they let her keep it. I also read that her father was Col. John F. Newsom of the 18th. TN Cavalry. Does anybody know if this really happened? That would have been quite an accomplishment if they knew who her father was. Does anybody know who John F.'s father was? Was Samuella's mother Susan M. Epperson or do I have my Newsom lines crossed again? Thanks!
