Thank you so much for the reply. I need to correct myself on the word adoption, he actually chose someone as his guardian. The only two Collins deaths I can find around the time William H. was choosing a guardian are Durham Collins and James Collins. I am so close to proving my William was blood kin to these Collinses, but just haven't located the correct documentation yet. Are you related to the Collines from Marshall Co. TN? Maybe I should go into NC and search for deaths, the way the guardianship record is worded it sounds like my William came from another area and wasn't already living in Marshall Co. Do you happen to know the names of James Collins' brother, perhaps my William was a son to one of his brothers. I can't find my William's death certificate, maybe it would have his parents on there. Any suggestions. I have added you to my ancestry family tree invite, in case if you'd be interested in seeing my Collins line. It is a work in progress from a very inexperienced want-to-be-genealogist!
