Tennessee began keeping birth and death records state-wide in 1908.
BIRTH RECORDS
The Tennessee State Library and Archives has state-wide Tennessee birth records for the years 1908-1912.
Prior to 1908, the four larger cities in Tennessee kept their own birth records: Chattanooga from 1879; Knoxville from 1881; Nashville from 1881; and Memphis from 1874. TSLA has copies of the early birth records for Chattanooga, Knoxville and Nashville. We only hold the early birth records of Memphis for the years 1874-1883.
The federal Social Security Administration was created in the 1930s. Starting in 1935, Tennessee began to issue what are known as "delayed" birth certificates. These certificates where not issued automatically; the individual had to request the record from the state and had to provide supporting evidence of the birth date. TSLA has copies of delayed birth certificates for the birth years 1869-1906.
DEATH RECORDS
Prior to 1908, the four larger cities in Tennessee kept their own birth records: Chattanooga from 1872; Knoxville from 1881; Nashville from 1874; and Memphis from 1848. Additionally, Davidson County (separate from Nashville) began keeping their own death records in 1900. TSLA has copies of the early death records of Nashville, Knoxville, Chattanooga and Memphis, as well as the Davidson County death records for 1908-1913. TSLA has state-wide death records for the years 1908-1912 and 1914-1957.
